Personal Growth is essential to our lives, lessons and skills learned throughout our day to day activities and through conscious learning will shape our entire future. A famous short story teller, B.J Neblett once said:
“We are the sum total of our experiences. Those experiences – be they positive or negative – make us the person we are, at any given point in our lives. And, like a flowing river, those same experiences, and those yet to come, continue to influence and reshape the person we are, and the person we become. None of us are the same as we were yesterday, nor will be tomorrow”
I couldn’t express it better myself, but maybe just add that those experiences can be influenced by our every day decisions. Yes, personal growth can be greatly influenced by our conscious mind and it is imperative that you realize this soon enough.
I will never forget back in high school after a frustrating losing streak, when a teacher came to me and said – Mario, you are responsible for your own personal development, nobody else can or will do it for you. The only way you are going to be better at this is if you consciously decide to do what it takes to get to that point – It hit me hard but that piece of advice has followed me over the past 28 years of my life. I understood earlier on in my life that it was my responsibility to keep learning, growing and becoming a better person and better professional each day of my life.
I believe this is something everybody needs to understand, so let me say it again: It is your responsibility to keep growing as a person, as a professional and as a human being. It is your responsibility to make conscious decisions to learn, to find inspiration, to ask questions where you don’t know the answers, to seek out resources to help you accomplish your goals, and applying everything you learn on the way to push you to the next level.
There isn’t a fixed goal you must aim to since there is always room to continue learning, to keep growing and to get better at what you do. This is a never-ending journey you must embrace and adopt as part of your daily routine.
In order to help you with your personal development, I have put together a list of topics you should explore and take to your heart:
Read, read, read…
Have you heard the saying – Tell me what you read, and I’ll tell you who you are – well, I would like to rewrite it to say – Tell me what you’ll read, and I’ll tell you who you’ll become – Because you change your future by learning, and reading is the most widely available method to learn new skills, to widen your knowledge, to create your future self.
